Misawa Air Force Base
Located in Japan’s Tohoku Region, Misawa is an Air Force Base on the U.S.A. It gets its name from the near-by city of Misawa, situated at a virtually inexistent distance from the base. Other surrounding cities include Towada and Hachinohe City. The base houses divisions from the entire four U.S. military departments: army, navy, marines and air force troops. It is also the place were 6,100 people are housed, 5,200 of whom are U.S. troops.
In terms of Air Force division garrisoned, Misawa is home to the USAF 35th Fighter Wing which basically uses F-16s (Js and DJ Flying Falcons mostly). The base is commanded by Colonel O’Shaughnessy, also the leader of the 35th Fighter Wing. The logo of this division is a straight-flying air combat plane, the symbol of courage and determination. Housing at the base is very good and there is still plenty of room for newcomers who want to be recruits at Misawa AFB. However, there aren’t many local attractions, apart from the facilities at the base. But, the educational facilities for youngsters are really good; they can be proficiently schooled at one of the 3 elementary schools.
Misawa was opened before World War II started, but not as a base of the U.S.A. It has been important throughout World War II to Japan, and now it is both a training base for the U.S. and a joint-forces base for the allied forces of Japan-U.S.A. It was opened in 1931. Misawa has decided not to receive any press during its secret missions of November and December 2007.
